What is Nitrogen Fill? Is It Worth It?

Nitrogen Fill is a common dealer add-on costing $199-$499 that provides negligible benefit over regular air. Regular air is already 78% nitrogen. For street driving, the difference is undetectable. In California, selling nitrogen fill under 95% purity is now banned under SB 766 as a "valueless" add-on.

Verdict: Junk Fee

$199 - $499

Why Dealers Push Nitrogen

  • • Claimed benefit: "Better tire pressure retention" and "cooler running tires"
  • • Reality: Studies show <1 PSI difference per month vs. regular air
  • • Cost to dealer: Under $5
  • • Profit margin: 95%+

How to Decline

Negotiation Script

"I am declining the nitrogen fill. Regular air is 78% nitrogen, and studies show no measurable benefit for street driving. Please remove this from my contract."
